Company Overview
Acunet founder Fernando Colon Osorio looked at the emerging Internet in 1994 and saw an opportunity. But while many entrepreneurs jumped feet first into get-rich-quick schemes for selling products over the Web, Colon Osorio took a visionary approach instead, peering into the future at how business will be conducted electronically.
What he saw and aptly named was the Fourth Generation of electronic commerce (4GEC) technology, which enables companies to launch world-class e-commerce sites in a fraction of the time and cost of mammoth sites like Amazon.com, E-trade and Dell Computer. Seeing the evolution of e-commerce as a series of generational advancements (similar to former Digital Equipment Corp. luminary Gordon Bells concept of computer generations), Colon Osorio founded Acunet to make high-volume e-commerce accessible to companies of every size.
In August 1996, Acunet spun out of Acumen Consulting, a consultancy that specialized in fault tolerant technology and systems integration. Acunet is a software company geared toward delivering scalable and affordable 4GEC products to companies looking to expand their sales reach onto the Internet.
Fourth Generation e-commerce
Colon Osorio theorized that the First Generation of e-commerce appeared with the birth and development of the World Wide Web and involved selling access to the Web. The Second Generation focused on the emergence of search engines and the selling of advertising space on Web sites. The Third Generation evolved when companies like Amazon.com, the E-trade Group and Dell Computer began conducting high-volume sales on-line. But with a price tag in the millions, sites like these are prohibitively expensive and take years to develop. A study released by International Data Corporation in 1999 indicates that the average cost for building an e-commerce Web site is about $6 million, with annual maintenance and promotion costs topping $4 million.
Enter Colon Osorio and the 4GEC concept. Imagine the worlds most successful e-commerce site, says Colon Osorio. Now imagine having it set up next week for 1/1000 the cost of world-class sites. That kind of thinking drives Acunet. Couple rapid deployment and low cost with the fact that Acunets technology makes it easier for consumers to purchase products on line, and Acunet becomes a valuable partner for any companys Web site.
Acunet defines the 4GEC market
Because it is one of the first companies to provide affordable, scaleable Web-based transaction processing software in an off-the-shelf, easy-to-implement format, Acunet is a pioneer in the Fourth Generation of e-commerce. Selling products and services over the Internet has become a multibillion-dollar-a-year, international business that analysts say is exploding.
Forrester Research, Inc. predicts commerce over the Internet will erupt from $43 billion in 1998 to $1.3 trillion in 2003. Currently though, the market for e-commerce systems is virtually untapped. Because most companies dont have the financial wherewithal to fund large-scale e-commerce sites, only a handful account for most of the goods and services now sold over the Internet.
Zona Research, Inc., predicts that 57 percent of companies will implement e-commerce systems by the end of 1999. Moreover, research published by the Gartner Group at its annual Symposium/ITxpo in November 1998 indicated that by 2008, 25 percent of consumer spending and 70 percent of business-to-business commerce in developed economies will involve the Internet.
To capitalize on these market opportunities, Acunet has developed its software family. will set the standard for market-leading 4GEC sites, bringing affordable, easy-to-use Web-based transaction processing to customers in a fraction of the time of large-scale solutions. AcuShops 4GEC products are founded on the principle of STEPS (Scalability, Transaction processing, Ease-of-use, Pervasiveness and Security) technology. E-commerce products that are STEPS-enabled can grow with a company as its business expands, while still offering inexpensive Web-transaction processing solutions. The product family offers solutions for business to business and business to consumer e-commerce applications.
AcuShop: Affordable E-commerce with ease
Colon Osorios vision of making e-commerce simple, economical, scalable and secure, has positioned Acunet to define an entire new market space. His background and experience are the foundations upon which he built Acunet. Colon Osorio was a pioneer in taking the concept of parallel processing architectures and applying it to Web-based transaction processing. To do that, he has deployed object-based technology in a distributed environment to make affordable, scalable and secure e-commerce possible.
According to Colon Osorio, the most successful companies doing business over the Web are the ones that will make it easier for consumers to purchase products and services using a computer. Using object-class technology, provides that level of ease. In addition to providing the core 4GEC technology through , Acunet provides companies with the consulting services and support to launch their e-commerce Web sites. Acunet offers customers high quality Web site design, development and e-marketing services as well as complete Internet access and hosting.
