Numerous safeguards and redundancies are in place to minimize the disruptions of service. The Dulles facility utilizes multiple oc-48 fiber connections to different non-related points of presence on the Internet. Peering with multiple companies ensures that if one connection does not work, there are others that can accommodate the traffic. The facility is manned with administrators twenty-four hours each day, seven days a week.
To verify that each web site is operating properly, our network conducts a system test at 2-minute intervals. In addition, the network administrators use specific testing protocols to probe different Internet servers status. If a malfunction is detected in the server our staff is notified.
The hosting facility power system is equipped with eight Caterpillar standby generator that can produce 16,000 KW, 50,000-gallon fuel tank, redundant UPS battery modules, and redundant power transformers. The generator feed is capable of running for up to 96 hours under full load.
In normal operation the system is fed by utility power distributed to the two redundant UPS modules where the power is cleaned, conditioned and backed up by the 2 hours of battery power. If there is a loss of utility power or if incoming power becomes unstable the system senses the degraded power, automatically starts the generator and transfers the critical load to generator power. When stable utility power is restored and stabilized the system automatically transfers the critical load from generator back to utility.
