**********
Postrocks Servers are based on the Unix/Linux platform. They are built as mission-critical systems with special attention to performance and reliability. Postrock builds most of their servers themselves on location. This provides enhanced levels of control, flexibility and the ability to remotely anticipate and resolve problems before a customers business is affected. All servers run a customized version of RedHat Linux and utilize Apache Web Server software and SSL.
Currently Postrock servers are Dual Pentium 1.7 GHz processors with 1024 Megs of RAM. They are port monitored every five minutes for any irregularities in the system. Their platform is exceptionally fast and stable due to both raw server performance and server load balancing which ensures an even allocation of resources to each of their customers.
Postrock provides the Apache Web server so their Advanced Plan customers can manage Internet communications and transactions, answer requests from browsers, retrieve requested files, execute CGI scripts, and return document or script results.
Apache also manages data transaction security on domains and Web sites through SSL encryption keys and certification, as well as directory protection for files stored on a domain or Web site.
The Apache Web Server Manager allows Postrock.com customers to:
►View Apache server settings
►View Apache log reports
►Secure domains using SSL Certification (cert required)
►Set up protected directories on the Postrock.com server
►Create the groups for protected directories
►Manage the users in the groups using protected directories
►Access Microsoft FrontPage administration pages

Remote Login:
Open SSH provides secure remote access to another system over a network.
SSH allows the user to log on remotely and move files from one system to another in a secure environment. SSH is a replacement for telnet access.
Telnet is a common terminal emulation protocol that connects computers locally or across the Internet. It allows a user at a local computer to log onto a remote computer and run a program.
Postrock.com grants shell access only by request in order that customers may have access to existing compilers.
**********
File Management
The File Manager allows the management of the directories and files on customers web sites. Customers can create, rename, and remove directories and files, copy or move files to other directories, publish content to a Web site, and upload files for FTP transfers.
From the File Manager, customers can:
►Work with directories
►Work with files
With FTP access, customers can back up their domain data at any time using the Backup/Restore Manager
**********
File Transfer
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) transfers files across the Internet.
ProFTPD is a ftp server primarily written for the various Unix variants. It has been designed to be much like Apache in concept taking many of the ideas (configuration format, modular design, etc) from it.
After a page/site is created, it needs to be uploaded to the customers web server. Customers can either FTP their files via the command line (i.e. DOS), or use an FTP client which executes all the commands in a drag-and-drop interface. Postrock.com highly recommends the latter to beginners and experts alike. FTP clients make the publishing process simple.
Most FTP clients have the same basic layout, functionality, and price. Choosing one is simply a matter of personal preference. Some of the more popular clients for Windows-based computers include WS_FTP, CuteFTP, and BulletProof FTP and for Macintosh computers include Fetch, and Interarchy. All clients come with documentation and getting started usually doesnt take long to figure out.

Mail Access Protocol
POP3 (Post Office Protocol, version 3) and IMAP (Internet Messaging Access Protocol) mail servers store incoming email messages until users download them to their computers.
In addition to storing incoming email messages, the IMAP server allows users to archive email messages in folders, share mailboxes with other users, access multiple mail servers at one time, and more efficiently access email attachments.
Both POP and IMAP mail servers accept SMTP-formatted email messages.
**********
Mail
Sendmail is an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) mail server that routes SMTP email messages through the Internet to be stored on a mail server, such as POP3 or IMAP. SMTP is the most common email protocol on the Internet.
Sendmail also allows users to manage email features such as email aliases, redirects, autoresponders, and spam filters.
Email mailing lists may be managed through the Majordomo Mailing List Manager.
Mailing lists are commonly used to circulate topic discussions. A mailing list includes a set of list members. Whenever a list member posts an email message to the mailing list email address, that email message is distributed to all list members.
**********
Web-Based Email
In addition to accessing email from their own email programs, customers may also access email messages from a Web-based email account using MS Internet browser.
Postrock.coms Web-based email is provided by SquirrelMail and allows customers to read, reply, forward, compose, and store email messages. SquirrelMail is an email client that uses IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) to provide access to email messages directly on the Internet.
**********
Mailboxes/Users
Postrock.coms customers can manage their users from the Users window in their Web Control. For multiple users, a User Default template may be created.
Using Web Control, from the Users window, customers can:
►View existing users
►Search for a specific user
►Add new users
►Update user information
►Remove users
►Set up a User Defaults template
**********
Database Servers
Allows customers to work with SQL databases.
MySQL is a widely used relational database management system for SQL databases. A relational database stores data in separate tables rather than in one big table. A database management system allows users to add, access, and process data stored in a SQL database.
In the Web Control, php My Admin can be used to set up, configure, and view databases.
**********
Advanced Features
PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor for Apache) is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language. Because it is compatible with networks using IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or HTTP, it can easily manage dynamic Web page content.
Php My Admin Web Based MySQL Administration allows management of SQL databases over the Internet. php My Admin can handle administering entire MySQL database servers or just a single database over the Internet by removing any platform-specific limitations.
Postrock.com also provides a free basic Java chat room that will more than fill a customers needs and run without hindering the performance of the machine for others.
**********
Support Features
Using the Help System built-in to Web Control customers can open a book and display the topics it contains. They can also click the Help Icon on any page of the Web Control which will open context-sensitive Help that provides information about the page.
Postrock.com performs daily backups in case of system failure, but recommend that customers make regular backups on their own using the Web Control Backup/Restore feature. Postrocks restore charges may run as high as $150 per incident if the problem is on a customers end.
While e-mail is the preferred method of support, Postrock.com also provides phone support if necessary. Their office hours are 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. (Central Time USA).
