Virtual Private Servers
What is a Virtual Private Server (VPS)? VPS are a form of virtualization that split a single physical server into multiple virtual servers.
VPS is considered one of the most sophisticated modes of automation in the world of web hosting today as it allows multiple customers to share the expense of hardware and network connections without sacrificing privacy, performance or preference.
The use of such technology allows hosting providers to save money by simulating the features of a dedicated server multiple times upon a single physical hosting environment, while concurrently allowing them to deliver high-quality Web services to their end users. VPS solutions allow Web hosting resellers to provide a full range of services usually only afforded by dedicated hosting technology. Resellers can therefore offer their clientele full administrative or "root" access to their Web services.
VPS eliminates the restrictions of virtual hosting by providing all of the administrative features of a dedicated server. Each VPS user therefore receives their own set of services that they can customize to their specific needs. Virtual hosting is limited in comparison because its users do not have root access and software configurations cannot be customized, despite the fact that physical resources are also multiplexed. A virtual private server on the other hand, contains its own unique file system and CGI-BIN, disk space, system resources, bandwidth and memory allotments, which allow for a high level of customization.
Performance within one VPS partition will not interfere with performance with the rest of the VPS partitions. Ensuring such “performance isolation” is a feature not to be without if you are going to setup a VPS. Other features include “fault tolerance”, which will ensure errors in one VPS will not affect the others, and “enhanced security”, which ensure privacy among the VPS partitions.
The most popular feature that VPS customers use, however, is the "functional isolation" in the VPS capacity. Because a VPS has its own contained services, it is possible for users to install and customize their own open-source and commercial software packages.
And listing the advantages shows why VPS is a desired technology; • Administer their own file directories • Assign domain names that resolve to a primary domain • without having to go through the web host • Create and add e-mail accounts • Assign email addresses • Manage their own log files • Maintain passwords • Set permissions • Delete and install software • VPS administrators effectively have the ability to do whatever an administrator can do on a real, physical server.
Of course there will be disadvantages to all the technologies that had ever been invented, and VPS is no exception.
Interestingly, the disadvantages of hosting on a VPS are pretty much the same as what the advantages are. If you’re not sure what you are doing, having the full control that VPS allows can be very risky.
For example, you can accidentally delete files, or set permissions inappropriately, or allow viruses and other malware to enter the system and, overall, just make a real mess of things. So if you lack the technical skills to administer a web server, and are unable or unwilling to learn them, VPS hosting may not be a good choice for you.
However, if your site has reached a size where shared web hosting no longer accommodate the demands of your business, hosting your site in VPS can provide a highly cost-effective alternative.
When selecting a VPS plan, make it your business to understand how all the server resources are allocated, what the available options are for operating systems, how many VPS accounts will reside on each server, as well as the terms and conditions for upgrading and downgrading to a different plan.
