Running your eCommerce using osCommerce
Most people nowadays can just start their own side business online easily and effortlessly. All you need is minimum capital and the willingness to see through it from top to bottom. This is unlike brick and mortar businesses, where huge capital investments and inventory is needed to keep it running.
However, setup cost of ecommerce business will shore as well if you do not know what you are doing. If you get a custom-made shopping cart from a developer instead of getting one off the shelf is one costly mistake to make if you are just starting out.
It is ok for you to get one custom-made if you are already an established ecommerce businessman, since there might be some things off the shelf products are unable to provide for your special needs, but starters to the business may need to re-think that step.
One way is to get a free ecommerce shopping cart from your hosting provider. After all, you will need a place to host your ecommerce website, so why not get one that will offer you an ecommerce package that is worthy?
Most web hosting providers have ecommerce packages that you can use right off from the start. They will even help you to setup your shopping cart for free or a nominal fee.
Of course before you start, you will need to have 2 things, Domain Name and the Hosting Package.
Once you have them, you can start customising your osCommerce software.
Login to your hosting account would be the first thing you need to do. Locate your shopping cart software. It will usually be under the eCommerce section.
Once you click on the osCommerce icon or link, you will be transferred to the online store backend management. Here you can customize the store to your liking.
URL Path – it’s the subfolder path where the eCommerce is setup. If you want to setup eCommerce on “store” folder, type “store” on URL path folder. If you want to setup on root folder, leave the URL path to be blank. We’re going to setup on root folder, so leave the textbox blank.
Database Name - Specify the database name that you would like it to be created.
Site Administration MySQL password - Type MySQL database that’s given by your hosting provider. Normally is the same as main login username.
Username of tool administrator - Type the username that you would like to specify as eCommerce main admin account. Password of tool administrator - Type the password for the eCommerce admin account.
Confirm password of tool administrator - Confirm the admin account password again.
Email of tool administrator - Admin email contact.
Click Install - You’ll get message telling that you’re installation is successful. Your store is now ready and you can now access the eCommerce store on http://www.yourdomain.com.
